Place the cabinet assembly (the island base) right side up on the kitchen floor, and position the island precisely where you will install it. trace along the four corners of the island onto the floor with a pencil. remove the island. measure in from the traced lines, using the side and toe-kick thickness dimensions, and mark the floor.. Building a kitchen island can be pretty straightforward if you use stock cabinets for the cabinets and doors. use simple straight cuts on plywood and stock boards to wrap the cabinets. before you begin building the island, order your countertop made 21-1/4 inches wide by 56 inches long so that it’s ready to install when the base piece is done..

Build an island base from 2x4s. to make sure our island is not going to move around, it requires a base to secure it to the floor. ikea does sell these, but we decided to build our own using 2x4s. essentially, the base is a wood frame, attached to the floor using l brackets, that the cabinets sit on top of.. Here's what my dining room looked like before i started my reno. i was ripping this whole wall of cabinets out anyway for my reno but i'm all about re-use/re-cycle since i wanted a kitchen island and i was lucky enough to have an extra set of 2 double doored cabinets in my dining room originally. i decided to use both of the bottom cabinets to make my kitchen island..
